Vero posted a message to the Amis list that she heard the rumor on Radio Canada. (Merci Vero! smile.gif )
After checking out the Radio Canada site, I spotted this article. Sounds like Roy has not signed anything yet though.

My friend Carol had given Roy the book about General Dallaire at one of the June get togethers & told him she thought that it would be a great part for him to play! biggrin.gif If this actually does come about, she's going to be so thrilled! w00t.gif

Here is a Babelfish translation of the French article in Mary's link:

Rwanda

Will Roy Dupuis shake hands with the devil?

After playing the legendary Maurice Richard, Rocket, Québécois actor Roy Dupuis may play the part of the General Roméo Dallaire in a fictional feature film.

The film is based on the biography of the retired Canadian soldier.  Romeo Dallaire directed the small UN mission during the Rwandan genocide in 1994. Protesting against the indifference of the international community, he was finally forced to watch, impotent, thousands of people being massacred.

The film will be entitled Shake Hands with the Devil, the same title as General Dallaire's book. We recall that a documentary of the same name by the Canadian Peter Raymont already exists and was presented at the Sundance Festival amongst other places.

La Presse reports on Tuesday that Roy Dupuis' agent stated that an approach had been made, but that nothing was yet signed.

The film project is being developed by two English Canadian producers : Barna-Alper Productions, of Toronto, and Halifax Company Film, of Nova Scotia.

According to IMDb, Yves Simoneau will be the director.

translation tidied up a bit - viv

Apparently, the film will be a fictional story, but based upon real-life General Romeo Dallaire's biography.

I guess everyone's got the story now.

Here's La Presse

Some more trivia:

Filming will take place in Canada and S. Africa. It was meant to start in winter 2005, but got delayed. Filming is now expected to start within the month. (Well, quel surpris!)

In Un dimanche à Kigali (currently on release - see the CB thread), Roméo Dallaire is played by Guy Thauvette (Roy's brother in Mémoires affectives).
In Hotel Rwanda, he was played by Nick Nolte.
In the documentary Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire he played himself ... natch.

Thanks Viv, for moving it over here! smile.gif It does sound like it's pretty sure thing of Roy doing the movie.
Here's one from LCN also with a pic of Romeo Dallaire.

wacko.gif This was Trishab. I forgot to sign on. I've spent months listening to French Canadian culture news I barely understand during drive time in Pennnsylvania. This was the first time I actually heard them talk about Roy. I guess I can go back to listening to the 60's station now.

Here's an idea of the look that Roy will be aiming for - Dallaire interview Not too much of a stretch?

Interesting, same initials too. You are right, Viv, not too much of a stretch. Only Roy will make him a gorgeous hunk of man......he just can't help it.

Now, out of curiosity, would Dallaire's native tongue to French or English?

Great story about your friend giving Roy the book. I wouldn't blame her for beaming for a long, long time!!!

I might have to purchase another book.

And, Mary, thanks for the heads up and, Viv, your quick clean-up of the translation.

His ancestors come from Quebec, but his father was also army and his mother was Dutch. He was born in Holland but brought up in Montreal. I should have thought he was at least bi-lingual if not more. His website is in French and English.

Great RD links Viv! smile.gif Romeo Dallaire, that is. (I just noticed the initials too Karen in that interview link laugh.gif )

I had seen the book cover before, & recognized the chiseled features. Roy definitely has the 'look' & you just know he would 'become' the character as he's done so many times before. wink.gif
I have a couple of reservations though - one about the movie -the story has been told recently in film now a number of times. Although, definitely a story that needs to be told! And this one would be from the perspective of Gen Dallaire mainly.
So, it will be interesting to see what comes of it.
The other reservation...............Roy would have to have short hair AGAIN! wacko.gif mad.gif
Oh well, we'll have to deal with it I guess! laugh.gif

Trisha, I've done the same listening to the French Canadian radio station in the car! For some reason, I can't receive that channel in the house, but the car gets it!

Well, I know where I can get a copy of the book. Guess I'll and see what actually happens.

I can deal with Roy with short hair, it's Roy who seems to dislike it much, much more.

This sounds like just the thing that Roy likes to do. Granted, he's waaayyyy better looking than the original, but make up can do wonders. And as for cutting his hair...look how fast it grew back after MR! biggrin.gif

Thanks to all for the sources and all the news. Now we know! rolleyes.gif

Thanks for all the links and pics. smile.gif The interview with the General was extremely interesting. I would love to see this film with Roy as the General. Mary, I wonder too if this film would be too close to the other films about this situation. But maybe now is the time for the story to be told from the General's perspective.

Yes, we would have to deal with shorter hair again. sad.gif We can handle it. smile.gif Although, I am rather partial to the longer locks. biggrin.gif
